FAQ
Lash serum questions, answered
The questions British readers send us most, answered in the first sentence.
How long do lash serums take to work in the UK?
Most users see a fuller lash line at four to six weeks and full results at twelve to sixteen weeks. The pace is set by your lash growth cycle, not by the product, which is why brands that promise a transformation in fourteen days are selling the calendar rather than the chemistry.
Which is the best lash serum in the UK right now?
QUALASH Eyelash Serum, on our September 2026 ranking. It combines the proprietary QUA-X Complex with the cleanest tolerance record in the group. If you specifically want a formula stated to be free of prostaglandin analogues, Sweed Pro and The Ordinary say so on the pack. UKLASH is the best-value alternative and RevitaLash Advanced the fastest premium option.
Are prostaglandin-free serums less effective?
Usually slower on pure length, and much lower risk. Prostaglandin analogues such as isopropyl cloprostenate produce the most dramatic lengthening but carry the reports of redness, itching, darkened lids and iris pigmentation change. For sensitive eyes, a peptide serum is the standard recommendation.
Can I use a lash serum with extensions or after a lash lift?
Yes, if the serum is water-based and oil-free — QUALASH, UKLASH, The Ordinary, Sweed and Olaplex all qualify. Oil-containing formulas such as RapidLash break down extension adhesive and shorten the set.
What happens if I stop using it?
Lashes return to their natural length and density over one or two growth cycles, roughly two to four months. Nothing is damaged; the serum was holding a longer growth phase and that support ends.
Can I use a lash serum on my eyebrows?
Most peptide serums are formulated for both, and several are sold as lash and brow products. Brows respond more slowly because their growth cycle is shorter — expect three to four months.
Is it safe with contact lenses?
Yes, if you take the lenses out before applying and leave them out for around fifteen minutes. Apply at night and this is not an issue.
Can I use one during pregnancy?
Speak to your midwife, pharmacist or GP first. Prostaglandin analogues are generally avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding, and most peptide brands recommend a conversation with a clinician rather than giving blanket approval.
Do serums make lashes fall out at first?
No. Lashes shed on their own cycle throughout a course, and a shed in week two is coincidence rather than cause. Persistent, heavy loss is a reason to stop and check the ingredients with a pharmacist.
Should I patch test a lash serum?
Yes, and almost nobody does. Put a small amount on the inner forearm and leave it 24 hours before it goes near your eyes. It costs you a day and catches most reactions before they reach your lids.
Can I use two serums at once?
There is no benefit and a clear downside: if your lids react you will not know which product caused it. Finish one sixteen-week course, judge it, then change.
Do lash serums work on the lower lashes?
Only if the brand states it. Most are formulated for the upper lash line, and applying to the lower lid puts the product much closer to the eye surface.
Will a serum darken my lashes?
The lash line usually looks darker within weeks, mostly because lashes are thicker and denser rather than pigmented. Prostaglandin analogues can also darken the eyelid skin itself, which does not always fully reverse.
How much serum does a four-month course need?
Usually two bottles, occasionally three if you also treat brows. Work the cost out per course rather than per bottle before you commit to a premium brand.
